How Do I Prepare My Family for an Outdoor Family Photoshoot in Springfield?

Planning your first family photoshoot is exciting, but it's completely normal to have questions. One of the most common questions I receive from families is:

"How do I prepare my family for an outdoor family photoshoot in Springfield?"

Quick Answer

To prepare for family photographs in Springfield, choose outfits that coordinate in soft, timeless colours, bring snacks and spare clothes for young children, schedule your session in the afternoon for the most flattering natural light, and most importantly, come ready to enjoy quality time together. My job is to guide you through the entire session, so you don't need to worry about knowing how to pose or what to do.

Below are my favourite tips to help your family enjoy a relaxed, fun experience and create beautiful memories together.

1. Choose Outfits That Complement Each Other

What you wear has a big impact on the overall look of your family photos.

For outdoor family photographs , I always recommend choosing outfits that coordinate rather than match exactly. Instead of everyone wearing the same colour, select a soft colour palette that complements each other beautifully.

Some of my favourite colours are:

• Beige and cream

• White

• Light blue (including denim jeans)

• Soft yellow

These colours work wonderfully with natural outdoor locations and perfectly complement my light and airy photography style.

Try to avoid large logos, bright neon colours or busy patterns, as they can draw attention away from what matters most, your family's connection.

Remember, your photos should feel timeless, so choosing simple, classic clothing is always a great decision.

2. Bring a Few Helpful Extras

A little preparation goes a long way towards making your session enjoyable for everyone.

If you have meaningful props, such as flowers, a favourite teddy, a blanket or a special toy for your child, feel free to bring them along. These personal touches can make your photos even more meaningful and often help children feel comfortable.

If you've booked my Ideal Package or Premium Package, you're welcome to bring a second outfit. I'll provide a portable changing room on location, making it easy for everyone to get changed during the session.

If you're bringing young children, I also recommend packing:

• Water

• Small snacks

• Baby wipes

• Nappies if needed

We'll take little breaks whenever they're needed, so there's never any rush.

3. Preparing Young Children

As a photographer, I've learned that every child is different, and that's exactly what makes family photography so special.

Here are a few simple ways to help your little ones have the best experience.

Make sure they're well rested and well fed

A child who's had enough sleep and a full tummy is usually much happier during a photoshoot. If possible, try to schedule naps and meals before arriving.

Be patient and let children be themselves

Children don't always arrive excited about having their photos taken, and that's perfectly okay!

Rather than expecting them to smile on command, I prefer to let them settle in naturally. We'll chat, explore the location, play little games and create genuine moments together.

And yes... with Mum and Dad's permission, I may occasionally use a little harmless bribery! Sometimes a sticker or a small treat works wonders. 😊

The best smiles are always the ones that happen naturally.

Bring a spare outfit

Even if you've booked my Simple Package, I always encourage parents to pack an extra outfit for young children.

Kids can spill drinks, find muddy puddles or simply decide they'd rather wear something different. If they need a quick change, that's absolutely fine, we'll simply keep going.

4. The Best Time for Outdoor Family Photographs

Lighting is one of the most important ingredients for beautiful outdoor portraits.

For family photographs in Springfield, I generally recommend scheduling sessions after 2:00 pm, when the natural light becomes softer and more flattering.

The warmer afternoon light creates gentle shadows, beautiful skin tones and that dreamy glow many families love. It also helps us avoid the harsh overhead sunlight that often causes squinting and strong shadows.

Depending on the season, I may suggest a slightly different start time, and I'll always recommend what will give you the best possible results.

5. What Happens During the Photoshoot?

If you've never had professional family photos before, you might be wondering what actually happens during the session.

Don't worry, I'll guide you every step of the way.

I'll arrive a little early and be ready before your scheduled start time.

I begin by working through my planned shot list, making sure we capture all the important combinations, including:

• The whole family together

• Mum and the children

• Dad and the children

• Siblings together

• Individual portraits

• Natural candid moments

Throughout the session, I'll gently guide your posing while encouraging plenty of natural interaction. Some of my favourite images happen between poses, when you're laughing together, cuddling your children or simply enjoying the moment.

Before we finish, I'll always check with you to make sure there's nothing else you'd like photographed.

Once we're both happy that we've captured everything, we'll wrap up the session, and within three days I'll send you a proof gallery where you can select your favourite images for professional editing.

Final Thoughts

Preparing for family photographs in Springfield doesn't need to be stressful.

With coordinated outfits, a few essentials packed for the kids and the right timing for beautiful natural light, you've already done most of the work.

The rest is my job.

My goal is to create a relaxed environment where your family can simply enjoy spending time together while I capture genuine smiles, natural interactions and memories you'll treasure for years to come.
